You read that right, stud muffin.

Two words most people would never use in the same universe, much less the same sentence, I just put out there for a bunch of people to read.

Insurance is my career and while it may not be very “cool” to admit, I LOVE it!

Every single day I wake up, hop in my car, “I’m Sexy and I Know It” might be playing on repeat and I think to myself “I’m going to do my sexy job, with my sexy coworkers, and my sexy clients.”

Well… Maybe that part is a lie and using the term sexy that much makes me uncomfortable, but the loving my job part is, hand on the bible, so help me God, TRUTH.

In the spirit of total honesty, that wasn’t my initial reaction to this industry.

I started this job to pay the rent until I could find the job that would light my fire and make life truly worthwhile.

My perception was similar to what a vast majority of adults and college students think today.

Insurance is Boring?

So. Insanely. Boooooooring.

Five years in and I’ve heard every reason why insurance sucks-

“insurance companies just want your money and I don’t want to be a part of that.”

“There’s only old guys in it.”

“Why would I do that when I can be [insert any other profession here.]”

“Cool, I’m not here to defend any of those reasons; I still think being a trust fund baby might be more fun than an insurance agent, but there’s always two sides to every story.

I use the term “sexy” loosely.

The definition has changed throughout the years, but I want to be clear that we’re not running a 50 shades of insurance scheme at the office.

I only mean something appealing to the masses.

Urban dictionary’s definition explains the new definition of sexy to us.

SexyIs supposed to mean attractive, however recently it has become a word or ambiguous meaning that morons use when unable to think of a better adjective for something they like or find appealing.

LISTEN: Why People Hate Insurance

There’s Room For Everyone

My husband and I are two very different people (or as some call us, millennials).

I love people.

He hates people.

I am glass half full.

He is glass half empty.

I think it’s acceptable to talk to strangers in line.

He walks away to find the Oreos.

Even being two completely different people, there’s a place for him in my industry that he would probably love.

What people don’t realize is how versatile it is.

There’s selling, there’s marketing, there’s prospecting, and managing, and pretty much anything else you could think of.

Is your dream to be a deep-sea diver?

You could work in insurance to inspect dam walls or large watercraft and get paid to do just that.

Do you love math and would be happy crunching numbers and spreadsheets all day?

According to Forbes, one of the top jobs with the most earning potential in the world would be an insurance actuary where you could do just that.

It’s About The People

Personally, I love people.

I want to be around them and I want to help them.

My job is all of that and then some.

Growing up my main concern was always the existential question “can I have it all someday?!”

Could I have the career? Could I have a family? Could I have everything I wanted and more?

I feared being stuck at a desk 8 to 5 every single day for the rest of my life.

I feared working in a job that wouldn’t make a difference.

All those fears have long since subsided.

I know my profession is an amazing career and when I do choose to have a family it will provide the flexibility I need and the financial backing to do all the things we want.

Someone Get Me a Cape

I might not wear one, but I’ve saved the day a few times in my own way.

When a client’s building is burning down and the sentence “I’m their insurance agent” gets you past the police and fire trucks, it does give you all the feels.

It’s even better when you’re standing in the same spot a year later looking at the brand-new building that your life’s work helped rebuild.

Better With Age

The insurance industry has ties back to 1750 BC with the Ancient Chinese so I guess you could say it’s well established.

Just because it’s been around forever doesn’t mean that it isn’t evolving though.

Technology is the world’s, and industry’s best asset.

Things that would take days now take hours to improve someone’s daily life. Innovation is pretty cool.

As if it that doesn’t make it appealing enough, in the next 5 years it’s said the 60% of our industry will be retiring.

That’s The Sound of Opportunity

It’s massive for those willing to take it.

I’ve heard it said that millennials no longer just want a stable job.

We want it all; the fulfillment, the salary, the flexibility, and all in the 21st century technology.

We want the cool factor and then some.

It’s hard to find a profession that can give us every aspect we want, but I’m here to tell you, the job is out there.

Those that came before may have done a horrible job of selling what a great life this profession can provide, but that’s all changing. Insurance is bringing sexy back.
